Green Cabinetry

What makes a cabinet “green”?

The materials that make up a cabinet, along with the way it is made, have an impact on the environment. You can minimize that impact by choosing from a variety of eco-friendly options at BBR, including different wood species, finishes, and cabinet box construction. Most of our manufacturers are located in the Northeast, so the environmental impact of shipping is minimal.

Green options to look for include:

Box construction

  • Plywood or particleboard with no added urea formaldehyde (NAUF)

Doors

  • FSC-certified wood doors
  • Low-VOC finishes
  • MDF (medium density fiberboard)

Wood choices

  • Bamboo is rapidly renewable, but shipped from China
  • Exotic veneers may be endangered species
  • Maple, oak, cherry, and birch are usually North American

Finishes, stains, and paints

  • Water-based finishes are the most common low-VOC options and the only ones available from our suppliers
  • Or, order unfinished and use your own water-based finishes

  • Within 500 miles

Certification by rating agencies

  • FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)
  • Greenguard
