Reuse Center Retail Sales Position

Full Time:  We are seeking a retail sales person who is outgoing and who enjoys interacting with people regularly. We generally get to know our customers/members by name which makes for a unique shopping experience. Our customers are motivated homeowners seeking not only affordable, good-quality materials but also ideas and strategies for maintaining and improving their homes. A desire to share one’s knowledge related to home improvement is a trait we look for in hiring new staff. The BBR/RC is a dynamic company that is very much a part of the “green” building movement.

Job Responsibilities

Customer Service & Sales

  • Greet members and customers when they enter the store

  • Explain overall BBR/RC program to new customers including our “buying,” “deposit,” and “pick-up” policies

  • Answer customers’ questions and direct them to materials they are looking for

  • Process sales via Point of Sale computer program

  • Clearly mark “sold” and “pick-up date” on materials for which someone has rendered a deposit

  • Assist customers with loading materials into their vehicle so long as the materials can be fastened securely. If in doubt, ask management for second opinion

  • Maintain a clean, neat and professional appearance and treat customers fairly and courteously at all times

Warehouse Organization and Maintenance

  • Contribute to maintaining an organized, clean, safe warehouse/store, both inside and out, including keeping aisles free of materials and floors broom clean daily

  • Assist with organizing and reorganizing building materials in racks and on floor on a daily basis

  • Assist with design and implementation of special displays to showcase certain materials

  • Learn the proper use of all material handling equipment and help keep it in good working condition

  • Take precautions when moving heavy materials

  • Help with trash control and collection as well as learn and practice company-mandated recycling procedures

  • Clean up trash and debris around the perimeter of the warehouse daily and put into dumpster

  • Coordinate with Program Manager to establish daily/weekly/long-term goals for materials organization and display


  • Pursue knowledge of materials we sell: appropriate uses and fair market values

  • Help unload incoming donations

  • Accompany driver on truck pick-ups when asked by manager

  • Attend monthly staff meetings

  • Help with snow shoveling as needed


  • Two years experience in construction, building materials, or related retail sales

  • Knowledge of building materials suitable for residential use

  • Some knowledge of fair market values for new and used building materials

  • Ability to work as team member as well as alone

  • Demonstrated history of reliability and punctuality

  • Ability to stay calm and focused when asked to do many tasks at once

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. frequently, and up to 100 lbs. occasionally, from varying positions

  • Bilingual in Spanish a plus

  • Computer literate in MS Office

  • Available to work Saturdays

Salary & Benefits

  • Wages commensurate with experience and qualifications

  • 2 weeks paid vacation for first three years of service, after third year 3 weeks per year, after six years 4 weeks per year

Part-Time Office Assistant

5-10 hours per week

Boston Building Resources is a building materials supplier comprised of both a consumer co-op selling new building materials and a nonprofit reuse center taking in and selling used building materials. We are seeking a detail-oriented, organized person to join our staff to assist with administrative tasks such as filing and ordering office supplies.


  • File accounting paperwork. At the end of the fiscal year, box up older records for long-term storage and set up folders for the current year.

  • File new and renewal member cards.

  • Keep track of vendors for various office supplies and place orders when needed.


  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Organized and attentive to detail

  • Ability to work independently


5-10 hours per week on days to be determined.
