Reuse Center Renovation Enters the Final Stretch

The past month has seen significant progress on the renovation of the Reuse Center as the work enters its final stretch. Pending approvals from the Inspectional Services Department, we plan to announce a March reopening date.

Here are some of the milestones reached this winter:

HVAC system

The all-electric heating and air conditioning system is up and running. Two Daikin brand rooftop units (RTUs) heat or condition the air, then distribute it evenly inside the space through Ductsox brand fabric ductwork running along the ceiling. Powering the RTUs has required some work by Eversource to increase the capacity of our connection to the grid. Next up: solar panel installation!

Building exterior

  • HardiePanel siding has been installed on the building addition. These fiber-cement panels were donated material; we’re practicing what we preach by utilizing reused materials!

  • The ramp for accessible entry is currently being installed.

Showroom

  • We’ve made progress building the checkout station, which features vintage doors and donated cabinetry.

  • Drywall and plywood have been installed on walls, and painting is in progress.

  • The racks are back and have been positioned in their new locations.

  • Work on the second restroom is nearly complete. The floor tile comes from our own [donated] stock, and the installation was completed gratis by Joe DeDominici, a contractor from BBR’s tradesperson referral file.

We know our customers will appreciate this warm and well-lit space!

Behind the scenes

  • The vehicle bay is largely completed. The curb cut work is done, overhead doors installed, and a carbon monoxide monitoring system in place. Minimizing exposure to the elements will extend the life of our truck and van.

  • A staff and volunteer break room is coming together. More donated cabinetry has been used here, as well as lockers for workers to store their personal belongings.

We have secured a loan to allow us to complete this project without delay, but still need to raise the remaining $700,000 of the project budget. Please contribute if you can, so we can complete our project debt-free and focus on serving customers and advancing our mission in the years ahead.
