Job Opening: Retail Sales Position (part time)

Boston Building Resources has a job opening for a part-time salesperson in our Reuse Center. We are seeking an outgoing person who enjoys interacting with people, who has some knowledge of home repair and building materials, and who can help move materials when they are purchased, lifting up to 50 pounds regularly.

Hours will be Monday and Tuesday 8:00-4:30, Thursday 11:00-7:00, and will likely include Saturday shifts in the future (9:00-3:00).

Job Duties

Customer Service & Sales

  • Greet members and customers when they enter the store

  • Explain our program to new customers, including our membership, deposit, and pickup policies

  • Answer customers’ questions and direct them to materials they are looking for

  • Process sales via POS (point of sale) computer program

  • Clearly mark “sold” and “pick-up date” on materials on which someone has rendered a deposit

  • Assist customers with loading materials in the vehicle so long as the materials can be fastened securely. If in doubt, ask management for second opinion.

  • Maintain a clean, neat, and professional appearance and treat customers fairly and courteously at all times.

 Warehouse Organization and Maintenance

  •  Contribute to maintaining an organized, clean, safe warehouse/store, both inside and out, including keeping aisles free of materials and floors broom clean daily
  • Assist with organizing and reorganizing building materials in racks and on floor on a daily basis

  • Assist with design and implementation of special displays to showcase certain materials

  • Learn the proper use of all material handling equipment and help keep it in good working condition

  • Take precautions when moving heavy materials

  • Help with trash control and collection as well as learn and practice company-mandated recycling procedures

  • Clean up trash and debris around the perimeter of the warehouse every other week and put into dumpster

  • Coordinate with Program Manager to establish daily/weekly/long-term goals for materials organization and display


  • Pursue knowledge of materials we sell – appropriate uses and fair market values

  • Help unload incoming donations from truck

  • Accompany driver on truck pick-ups when asked by manager


  • One year experience in construction, building materials, or related retail sales

  • Knowledge of building materials suitable for residential use

  • Some knowledge of fair market values for new and used building materials

  • Ability to work as team member as well as alone

  • Demonstrated history of reliability

  • Ability to stay calm and focused when asked to do many tasks at once

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. frequently, and up to 100 lbs. occasionally, from varying positions

  • Spanish or Kreyol language ability a plus

  • Available to work Saturdays

Salary & Benefits

  • $10.00 to $15.00 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications. 
  • 10 paid holidays per year
  • 2 weeks paid vacation for first three years of service, after third year 3 weeks per year, after six years 4 weeks per year
